Grunge Cuddles

Ryan Buxton - Manchester based singer-songwriter, guitarist, and self-confessed music nerd -  makes sense of the world around him through his music. Whether with full band or flying solo, Buxton’s songs often grow from textured folky beginnings into haunting or dreamlike soundscapes to get lost in.

Born and raised in Cambridge and the Fenland area of East-Anglia, Buxton cut his chops playing in a local funk band and acoustic duo, whilst crafting his own more melancholic sound, often described as a 'grunge cuddle'; sad songs with a warm centre. His first EP ‘Little Green Fly’, recorded in collaboration with a host of talented Cambridge musicians and released in 2017, signalled both the end of his time in Cambridge and the first step to full realisation of the grunge cuddles sound. It’s music to collect your friends and drive out to The Fens to, and second track ‘The Seasons (What Hurts the Most)’ was championed by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire DJ Tom Simkins.

After the release of his EP, Buxton made a choice to make Manchester his new home. With the new city came new horizons and a new sound. Inspired by the community in the city Buxton began developing new ideas of how to mix his folk and rock roots with the electronica of Boards of Canada but also the arrangements and intrigue of 70's bands like Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell. There is a growing sense of confidence and exploration to this music not only in the music but in his lyrical choices and vocal phrasing.

He has released four singles - Curtains, Dead Horses, Facts and Figures, and Formation - in Manchester, leading up to an album release in 2024.
